Google smart speakers just became way more useful with this memory update

Google is rolling out a major quality-of-life update to its smart home ecosystem, officially introducing a 15-minute conversational memory window for Gemini for Home. Detailed in the latest July 2026 Google Home release notes, this update allows your Google smart speakers and displays to remember the context of your previous commands for up to 15 minutes. That means you no longer have to restate the specific room, device, or topic when you want to make a quick adjustment a few minutes down the road.

For example, you can walk into your kitchen and say, “Hey Google, turn on the kitchen lights.” Five or ten minutes later, while you’re cooking or cleaning up, you can simply say, “Hey Google, dim it to 50%.” Because of the expanded memory window, Gemini will understand exactly what “it” refers to without requiring you to say “the kitchen lights” all over again.

This upgrade applies across the board to the entire Gemini for Home experience, making your interactions feel far more natural and less like you are issuing rigid, robotic instructions. And while flashy AI demos usually focus on complex queries and long-form brainstorming, it’s these practical tweaks to basic home automation that make the biggest difference in daily use, at least for me at this point.

The feature is currently rolling out as part of the Gemini for Home Early Access program, so it may take a little time to reach every user.
