Since its inception, YouTube TV has been one of the best ways to cut the cord without losing the live TV experience. But as the price has slowly crept up to $72.99 over the years, the service has started to feel a lot like the cable packages it was meant to replace. We’ve all asked the same question: “Why do I have to pay for 100 channels when I only watch a few?”
Well, Google has finally heard us. In a major announcement today, YouTube TV revealed that starting in early 2026, they’re launching “YouTube TV Plans”—an overhaul of their subscription model that will let you break free from the massive base bundle.
Pick your plan
According to Christian Oestlien, VP of YouTube TV, the service will introduce over 10 genre-specific packages. The goal is simple: give you control over what you pay for.
Instead of being forced into the “Base Plan” (which will still exist for those who want it), you will be able to mix and match smaller, focused bundles. The announcement specifically mentions plans that will focus purely on Sports, one that will combine Sports and News, and a plan centered on Family and Entertainment
The ‘Sports Plan’ dream
The headliner here is undoubtedly the YouTube TV Sports Plan. For millions of subscribers, live sports are the only reason they subscribe to live TV. This new plan promises to strip away the fluff while keeping the essentials.
The Sports Plan will include:
- All major broadcasters (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC)
- FS1 and NBC Sports Network
- All ESPN networks (including the new ESPN Unlimited)
- Full access to features like Unlimited DVR, Multiview, and Fantasy View
Crucially, you can still add NFL Sunday Ticket and RedZone to this package. This means you could potentially have a streamlined, sports-only subscription without paying a dime for HGTV, Nickelodeon, or cable news channels you never watch.
Why this is important
This is the unbundling we have been waiting for. For years, the industry excuse was that networks wouldn’t allow providers to split up their channels. Disney wouldn’t let you have ESPN without Disney Channel; Fox wouldn’t let you have FS1 without Fox News.
With “YouTube TV Plans,” Google seems to have finally cracked that code. By offering genre-based tiers, they are giving users the ability to tailor their monthly bill to their actual viewing habits.
We don’t have pricing details yet, but the prospect of paying less for a focused “Sports + News” combo is incredibly exciting. Rollout begins in early 2026, and we expect to hear a lot more about pricing and specific channel lineups soon.
