The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is easily one of the most intriguing devices to hit the market this year, specifically for those who have been eyeing the power and efficiency of the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra platform but needed a convertible form factor. While the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 has garnered plenty of well-deserved praise for its performance and battery life, it remains a traditional clamshell. Acer’s Spin 514 takes that same internal DNA and wraps it in a versatile 2-in-1 chassis with USI pen support, and right now, you can pick it up at Best Buy for an all-time low price of just $499.
Why this device is awesome
This $200 discount brings a significant amount of value to a device that was already competitive at its $699 MSRP. The heart of the experience is the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910, a fanless chip that delivers a level of silence and cool operation that is rare in the “Plus” category without sacrificing raw power. This processor has proven to be a beast for multitasking, aided significantly by the generous 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of fast UFS storage.
The display is another high point, featuring a 14-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) IPS panel. While it doesn’t reach the deep blacks of an OLED screen, it makes up for it with a 120Hz refresh rate. The 16:10 aspect ratio also provides that extra vertical real estate that is essential for productivity, and the battery life on the Spin 514 remains one of its true superpowers.
Thanks to the efficiency of the Kompanio Ultra, users can realistically expect upwards of 12 to 14 hours of actual work on a single charge. This effectively makes it a two-day Chromebook for many users, allowing you to leave the charger at home for all but the longest trips.
Throw in Wi-Fi 7 support, a 1080p webcam with a privacy shutter, and a durable MIL-STD-810H tested aluminum top cover, you have a Chromebook that feels ready for almost any environment.
At this $499 price point, the few gripes I have with this Chromebook are incredibly easy to overlook. Getting a high-performance convertible with a 120Hz screen and elite battery life for under $500 is a rare opportunity. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to jump into the Chromebook Plus ecosystem, this deal on the Spin 514 is undoubtedly it.
