Just a couple of months after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, Google is ready to talk about the future of its immersive platform again. In a surprise announcement, Google has revealed they will be hosting a special livestream event titled “The Android Show | XR Edition” on Monday, December 8th at 10 a.m. PT.
The official teaser page (spotted by 9to5Google) promises a 30-minute presentation where we’ll “learn about all things XR across glasses, headsets, and everything in between.” This phrasing is particularly interesting. While the Galaxy XR headset is the current flagship, Google has been dropping hints about smart glasses for a while now. The teaser video even features the Android mascot sporting a pair of glasses with a visible camera module, potentially hinting at a showcase of the much-anticipated AR glasses form factor.
The description also heavily emphasizes Gemini, promising to show how the AI assistant will deliver a “more conversational, contextual, and helpful experience.” This aligns with what we’ve seen so far on the Galaxy XR, but we’re hoping to see even deeper integration.
It’s also worth noting the significance of Google hosting its own dedicated event so soon after the Galaxy XR launch. While Google executives shared the stage with Samsung in October, that was ultimately a hardware launch focused on a single device. The last time Google truly took the mic to discuss the Android XR platform vision on its own terms was back at Google I/O in May. Hosting “The Android Show” now signals that Google is ready to shift the conversation from a single headset to the broader ecosystem, potentially opening the floodgates for what Android XR looks like beyond Samsung.
New Android XR hardware on the horizon?

While it looks like the event will certainly focus on platform updates and new software features, the timing suggests we might see more hardware news. We already know about XREAL’s “Project Aura” glasses slated for next year, and this event would be the perfect stage to highlight partner devices or even show off a version of Samsung’s own AR glasses.
Whatever they have in store, it’s clear that Google is keeping its foot on the gas with Android XR. You can head over to the teaser page now to set a reminder, and we’ll obviously be tuning in to cover everything announced.
