With Google’s September 15 in-person media showcase in NYC just a few weeks away, the underlying software pieces for the Googlebook ecosystem are falling into place at rapid speed. Over the last month, we’ve tracked leaks that showcase everything from incredible new hardware to the new ‘Continue On’ hand-off feature. Now, Google is updating the core plumbing on Android phones to make sure everything communicates seamlessly on day one.
In the latest release notes for Google Play services v26.33, reported by GbookHub, Google has officially added backend support that allows Googlebooks to access, stream, and control smartphone applications directly on larger desktop displays.
How ‘Cast My Apps’ works under the hood
The update to Google Play services v26.33 introduces explicit system-level hooks for PC and phone handshakes, laying the direct foundation for ‘Cast My Apps’.
Under the hood, Google Play services handles discovery, authentication, and secure peer-to-peer streaming between your Android phone and Googlebook over local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy.
Instead of requiring separate app installations or manual screen mirroring setups, apps installed on your phone simply appear in your Googlebook interface. Tapping an app instantly opens it in a dedicated desktop window, while the service layer maps your physical keyboard, trackpad clicks, and shared clipboard directly to the mobile session.
Why this is a massive upgrade over ChromeOS Phone Hub
If you’ve used a Chromebook over the past few years, you might remember that ChromeOS implements something similar with Phone Hub app streaming. While that feature was a great concept, it often felt sluggish in practice because it relied on a virtualized WebRTC video stream running inside a container, leading to noticeable input latency and fuzzy scaling.
Googlebook’s approach changes this process entirely. Because Googlebook runs on a native Android foundation, streaming an app from your phone no longer requires translating across different operating system containers. Without that virtualization overhead, mobile apps launch with immediate touch and cursor responsiveness, finally giving Android users a seamless experience on par with Apple’s iPhone Mirroring on macOS.
This also solves one of the biggest daily friction points for hybrid work: mobile-exclusive applications. While Googlebook is being built to handle heavy desktop suites like Adobe Premiere Pro and Canva, many of our most essential banking, smart home, and two-factor authentication tools still only exist on our phones. With ‘Cast My Apps’, you can quickly approve logins, check security cameras, or manage mobile-only services right from your laptop without constantly reaching for your phone.
What to expect next
Seeing ‘Cast My Apps’ explicitly detailed in public Google Play services changelogs confirms that Google’s multi-device ecosystem is locking into place just in time. Following recent updates to Desktop Camera and the Play Store’s large-screen app discovery filters, Google is ensuring that phone-to-laptop synergy is a headline strength on day one for Googlebook.
