We rarely write about content updates, but we really felt the need to let you know about this one! Developer Motion Twin released a content roadmap for Dead Cells, their souls-like rogue-like metroidvania and it has some pretty awesome things to get excited about. Before we get started, you should know that the game also on sale this week and you can pick it up on the Google Play Store below. Don’t forget to connect a controller to your Chromebook to get the most out of it!
As of Fall 2020, which falls between late September and December, the developers will drop the ‘Legacy Update’ which features more bosses, biomes, weapons, enemies, skills and mutations. We’re guessing this may basically be the Rise of the Giant DLC which is about a year old now, but it’s unclear at this point.
Bad Seed, the second content rollout due in early 2021 will be a paid DLC and will feature even more harvesting goodness, but this time you get to swing around a massive scythe! You’ll also get to play through 3 new levels:
The Arboretum: A relaxing and peaceful greenhouse inhabited by a peaceful clan of mushrooms, with an understandable desire to murder the Beheaded.
The Swamp: A noxious environment ruled by a band of tree dwelling mutants with pointy sticks, sneaky dart shooting frogmen and a bunch of deadly bloodsuckers.
The Heart of the Swamp: Domain of mama tick, if you’ve seen StarShip Troopers, you get the idea…

‘Bad Seed’ dropped on PC in February, but it will be new to mobile gamers. Two of the levels above are new additions to the base game and are alternatives to The Courtyard/Toxic Sewers and The Ramparts/Ossuary/Ancient Sewers with the boss designed to be on par with The Concierge.
Lastly, there is a third update slated for summer of 2021, but we haven’t received any information about it yet! Because the first two updates list about the same things, I imagine keeping update 3 a secret would mean that Motion Twin is not yet ready to speak about it or perhaps it’s something entirely different and potentially special.
I’ve been enjoying Dead Cells on my Pixelbook Go and on my phone in smaller spurts because the game is built around going through the levels over and over again on different ‘runs’. The idea is to proceed through the level using new routes, thus uncovering different secrets. It is a procedurally generated ‘metroidvania’ after all!
Let us know in the comments if you’re excited about Dead Cells getting a ton of content soon. Any time we see developers continue to support their games post-launch we’re happy, but the fact that developers are starting to care about bringing post-launch DLC to mobile is even more important!
