Just a couple of weeks ago, Google unveiled a massive suite of new AI features for the Chrome browser, with the “Gemini in Chrome” AI browsing assistant as the clear centerpiece. Today, the wait is over for business and education users, as Google is now beginning the general availability roll-out of Gemini in Chrome for eligible Google Workspace customers. This is a huge move that brings one of the most powerful new AI productivity tools directly into the professional workflow for users on Mac, Windows, and iOS.

What is Gemini in Chrome? A quick recap

For those who missed the initial announcement, Gemini in Chrome is a deeply integrated AI assistant that lives in your browser. Its killer feature is the ability to understand and work with the context of what you’re doing, referencing up to 10 of your open browser tabs along with the Google Workspace app.

This allows it to perform complex tasks like summarizing and comparing information across multiple websites, answering in-depth questions, and having two-way conversations via Gemini Live, all without you ever having to leave your flow.

The important details for Workspace users

For business and education users, this rollout comes with the necessary controls and protections. Google has confirmed that Gemini in Chrome for Workspace includes enterprise-grade data protections, meaning your content is not reviewed by humans or used for model training without permission.

Workspace administrators will also have granular control over the feature. It will be ON by default for organizations that already have the Gemini app enabled, but admins can turn it on or off at the domain, organizational unit, or group level.

It is important to note a few initial limitations for this launch. For now, the feature is available in the US and in English only, for users 18 and older. It is also blocked for customers who are under a HIPAA Business Associate Amendment (BAA).

This is a fantastic and powerful new tool for Workspace users, and it’s exciting to see it begin to arrive. The feature is on an extended roll-out schedule, so it may take 15 days or more to appear for all eligible users.
