The Pixel Watch 4 isn’t just repairable, it’s the new gold standard for smartwatches

October 10, 2025 By Joseph Humphrey View Comments

When Google first announced that the Pixel Watch 4 was designed to be serviceable, we were optimistic but cautious. After all, “repairable” can mean a lot of things. But after an incredibly detailed new video teardown from the experts at iFixit, it’s official: Google didn’t just make a repairable smartwatch; they’ve set a new gold standard for the entire industry, earning a stunning 9 out of 10 on the repairability scale.

When we first wrote about this, the news was a huge deal in and of itself. But seeing the actual teardown process confirms that this isn’t just marketing speak—it’s a fundamental shift in product design.

So, how did Google create the most repairable smartwatch on the market? The secret is surprisingly simple: they used screws and gaskets instead of a mountain of adhesive. As the iFixit teardown shows, a pair of T2 screws hidden under the band lugs actuates a clever hinged mechanism that holds the back panel in place. Tiny O-ring gaskets provide the water resistance, not a layer of sticky, hard-to-remove glue.

This thoughtful, serviceable design extends throughout the entire device. The battery, now encased in a protective metal container, is held in by just a few more screws. The display is the same story, sealed with another O-ring in a mechanism iFixit likens to a mechanical watch. In all, you only need a few common screwdriver bits, a spudger, and a pair of tweezers to perform the most common repairs.

This isn’t just a minor improvement; it’s a complete reimagining of how a compact, water-resistant wearable can be constructed. For years, the assumption has been that you had to sacrifice repairability for a sleek, sealed design. Google has proven that doesn’t have to be the case.

So, what does a 9/10 score mean for all of you who have already purchased this watch or are thinking about buying it? Well, it means that when your battery inevitably starts to fade in a few years, you won’t be forced to just get a new watch; instead, you’ll be looking at a simple, accessible battery swap. It transforms the Pixel Watch 4 from a disposable piece of tech into a long-term investment, which is a massive win for consumers and a huge step forward for sustainability.

While official parts aren’t available on iFixit just yet, Google has already published the official service manuals. It’s reassuring to know that when the day comes for a repair, the Pixel Watch 4 is more than ready!
