Last week, numerous YouTube users on iPhone and iPad encountered a frustrating issue: videos playing at unexpectedly low resolutions regardless of the connection speed. This problem affected both standard videos and Shorts, prompting widespread reports and an official acknowledgment from YouTube on Google’s support forums. The issue, which surfaced around March 20th, disrupted the viewing experience for many iOS users.
However, the good news is that YouTube has now confirmed the problem is resolved. In an update to their initial support post, they announced that streaming quality should be “back to normal.” This fix, implemented on Google’s server-side rather than requiring an app update, aims to restore the expected viewing experience for all users.
While the primary reports originated from iOS users, there were indications that isolated instances of this low-resolution issue might have affected other platforms as well. It’s likely that this fix addresses those cases as well, ensuring a consistent viewing experience across various devices.
If you’ve been experiencing these playback issues, you should now find that your YouTube videos are streaming at the correct resolution without any effort on your behalf. All in all, it was a frustrating issue that Google did well to quickly acknowledge and quickly clean up.
