We’re always on the lookout for signs that gaming on Chromebooks is being taken more seriously, and today we have a fantastic one. It’s not just another Android game that will run on ChromeOS; it’s a popular, exclusive title from Netflix that is being specifically optimized for large screens, complete with full keyboard and mouse support. Get ready for Squid Game: Unleashed, which is officially coming to Chromebooks.

This is a big deal. For a platform to succeed with gaming, it needs buy-in from major developers and publishers, and seeing Netflix and Google team up to bring this title to ChromeOS is a very encouraging sign.

What is ‘Squid Game: Unleashed’?

For those unfamiliar, Squid Game: Unleashed is a 32-player party royale game based on the mega-hit Netflix series. Developed by Boss Fight and Netflix Game Studio, it features the iconic challenges, characters, and settings that fans will instantly recognize from the show.

Optimized for the big screen

The best part of this news for Chromebook users is the focus on large-screen optimization. This isn’t just a stretched-out mobile port. According to Google, players will get to “experience immersive gameplay on a bigger screen, with keyboard and mouse support, updated control layouts and graphics that take full advantage of your device’s display.”

The keyboard and mouse support alone is a game-changer and shows a real commitment to making this a proper desktop gaming experience. Game director Bill Jackson added that “With a bigger canvas, players can further immerse themselves in the game’s chaos and fun, making each round even more memorable.”

A perfect match for new hardware like the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14

The timing for this release couldn’t be better. With powerful new devices like the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 just hitting the market, we finally have hardware that can truly make a game like this shine. Imagine playing Squid Game: Unleashed on that gorgeous OLED screen, powered by the new MediaTek Kompanio Ultra chip. The combination of a high-quality display and a processor that can handle impressive graphics should make for an incredible gaming session.

The launch is expected “in the coming weeks,” and according to one report, it’s timed to coincide with the debut of the third and final season of the Squid Game TV series. The report also notes that the game will receive updates tied to specific plot points from the show’s final season, making it a dynamic companion to the main series.

Seeing Netflix bring its first exclusive game to Chromebooks with this level of optimization is exactly the kind of momentum we love to see for the platform. We can’t wait to jump in and try it out when it lands!
