Samsung retiring its messaging app in favor of Google Messages is a win all around

For years, one of the biggest frustrations of the Android experience has been messaging fragmentation. When you buy a new phone, you shouldn’t have to guess which texting app is going to give you the best features or whether your high-resolution videos will compress into pixelated messes when sent to a friend on an iPhone.

After a long transition period, the biggest hardware player in the Android phone space is taking a major step to help unify messaging across the board.

According to recent notices sent out to Galaxy users, Samsung is officially shutting down the legacy Samsung Messages app on July 6. This move fully positions Google Messages as the undisputed, unified default for the world’s most popular smartphone lineup, and frankly, it is a great move that benefits the entire user base.

A graceful exit for a legacy application

The writing has been on the wall for a while. Samsung stopped pre-installing its proprietary messaging app on US devices back in 2024, and earlier this spring, the company posted an official end of service announcement detailing the final transition.

Starting this month, the legacy app will no longer be available to download from the Galaxy Store. For Galaxy users running Android 14 or newer, the system will automatically shift over to Google Messages, seamlessly swapping the old icon on the homescreen dock. While older devices running Android 13 and below will retain access to the legacy app for now, the transition is clear: Google Messages is the definitive future.

While some longtime Galaxy fans might initially miss things like the theme customization of the old app, the upgrade to Google Messages brings a heavy suite of modern features that simply can’t be ignored. By adopting Google’s platform natively, Samsung is ensuring its users have access to a much more powerful toolkit:

  • Expressive Gemini AI features: Users can now tap into powerful Gemini integrations for smart replies, photo remixing, and AI-powered text generation directly inside their active chats.
  • Advanced security guardrails: Google’s robust spam filters and AI-powered scam detection are now actively blocking suspicious texts and helping to keep your inbox clean.
  • Seamless multi-device connectivity: Switching conversations between a Galaxy phone, an Android tablet, or a smartwatch is now a fluid, uninterrupted experience tied directly to the Google ecosystem.

Unifying the broader Android landscape

By stepping aside and fully embracing Google Messages, Samsung is ensuring that the vast majority of the global Android user base is communicating on the exact same Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. This means real-time typing indicators, read receipts, high-quality media sharing, and enhanced group chats will work flawlessly out of the box, regardless of whether you are texting from a Pixel, a Galaxy foldable, or a Motorola device.

For a long time, the Android messaging experience felt like a disjointed mess compared to the walled garden of Apple’s iMessage. By putting proprietary software aside and adopting the best tool for the job, Samsung is helping Google continue to deliver the cohesive, unified messaging network that Google Messages was built for.
