For the past few years in August, those of us that follow tech updates tune in to the Made By Google showcase hoping for solid upgrades in Tensor processing power, GPU, and NPU and hopefully some interesting outer hardware updates to go along with them.

But for this year’s event, initial hands-on reports from publications like 9to5Google and creators like MKBHD and Mrwhosetheboss tell a remarkably consistent story: Google’s 2026 Pixel hardware lineup is a masterclass in incremental, safe iteration. Across all the hardware, you’d be hard-pressed to quickly see a difference in the Pixel 11 lineup versus the Pixel 10. And the same goes for the Pixel Watch 5.

Across the board, hardware changes are incredibly subtle, prices are up across the line, and the biggest updates are almost entirely driven by AI software tricks. So, to cut right to it, here is a quick, concise rundown of what is being announced, followed by why this relatively tame hardware cycle is actually pretty awesome news for the imminent launch of Googlebook.

Pixel Watch 5 ($399 – $429) & Pixel Tag ($29)

• Pixel Watch 5: Identical external design, but upgraded internally with a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, 3GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a new Gemini At a Glance feature and AI-generated watch faces.
• Pixel Tag: A $29 pill-shaped UWB Bluetooth tracker utilizing Android’s Find Hub network (shipping in November).

Clearing the stage for Googlebook

If you were hoping for substantial hardware upgrades on the Pixel side of things, this year’s Made By Google event might feel a tad bland. But looking at the broader Google ecosystem, this tame refresh creates a fascinating setup for what we all know is coming next.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying Google planned a muted phone cycle on purpose for the debut of Googlebook, but if Google had unveiled revolutionary phone hardware, wild new foldable designs (like the Z Fold 8), or radical Tensor G6 upgrades, it easily could have sucked all the oxygen out of the room for what we hope is next month’s Googlebook launch. Instead, Google has left the spotlight looking for a new place to shine.

With Googlebook likely to make its official debut in the next 4-6 weeks, Google’s brand-new desktop platform stands to be the most ambitious, innovative hardware and software story Google showcases in 2026 year.
