Hardcore survival fantasy RPG Outward shadow drops on the Stadia Store

November 30, 2020 By Michael Perrigo View Comments

Popular open-world indie hardcore survival fantasy RPG Outward just appeared on the Stadia Store this morning and this has a lot of people excited. Why you may ask? The game received okay reviews was riddled with bugs, and created with just a small team, but Stadia has long since needed more games that focus on role-playing elements and survival. While I say the game “shadow dropped” on Stadia, I should mention that Deep Silver, the game’s publisher has already released a few games on the platform including the Metro series and Windbound and they’re due to release their sentient spaceship combat game Chorus next year.

In Outward, you’re not a hero – you’re not even “the Chosen One”. The developers created the game with the specific goal of letting the player take on the role of a regular person in a fantasy world who would receive little to no hand-holding while learning the mechanics and would have to tackle some pretty realistic problems like hunger, thirst, fatigue, infected wounds hot and cold environments and more. There’s also no means of fast travel as you cross the game’s vast, open world of Aurai.

You are not a god, nor a chosen one. The path before you is fraught with perils.

The whole reason for the above choices is that the developers continually stress that they want to treat players as intelligent people who can figure things out for themselves in an age fraught with games that spoon-feed you with forced tutorials and on-the-nose gameplay. In order to come out on top, you’ll need to make sure you prepare before trekking outward from cities and take missions to acquire new gear.

In order to survive in the dazzling yet deadly world of Aurai, you’ll have to be cunning, clever, and prepared. Devise diverse strategies to defeat your foes and don’t neglect your basic needs, sharing your journey with a friend, locally or online. There is co-op gameplay, so you can take a Stadia friend along with you and there’s even a local co-op mode with split-screen – a dying, but welcome addition. Check out the overview trailer below to get a better sense for the game’s difficulty and mechanics!
