Having reviewed every iteration of Lenovo’s ChromeOS tablets over the years – from the original Chromebook Duet to the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 – I’ve spent countless hours evaluating how kickstands, hinges, and magnetic backplates handle real-world use. As a tablet that needs to also act as a desktop device, that hinge makes a big difference in the overall usability of a detachable.
When the recent leak surfaced showcasing Lenovo’s upcoming Googlebook lineup, I immediately honed in on the detachable 2-in-1 tablet that we’ve known for months now as the long-rumored ‘Sapphire’ device that has been in development for nearly a year.
A closer inspection of the leaked marketing images reveals a hardware detail that has me genuinely thrilled: Lenovo looks to be bringing back the angled kickstand hinge that debuted on the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11; and I think it is a brilliant decision all around.
Why the angled hinge is a game-changer
Traditional 2-in-1 tablet kickstands are built with a single horizontal hinge running straight across the backplate. While that works great for landscape mode on a desk, it makes portrait mode tough to wrangle and almost impossible when using the stand.
Lenovo solved this problem with a clever piece of mechanical engineering on the Duet 11. By slanting the kickstand’s hinge diagonally across the backplate, opening the flap creates a stable tripod base regardless of how you position the tablet:
- In Landscape Mode: The kickstand opens like a standard laptop backplate, propping the tablet up for typing, video calls, or watching widescreen content.
- In Portrait Mode: Rotating the device 90 degrees allows the angled fold to act as a vertical prop, propping the screen up at a comfortable viewing angle without needing an external dock or case prop.

Looking closely at the leaked hands-on photos of the ‘Sapphire’ Googlebook tablet, you can see the hinge line sits significantly higher on the right side of the backplate. That high, diagonal crease is the unmistakable signature of Lenovo’s slanted kickstand design.
Dual-orientation support for Gemini and multimodal workflows
Portrait mode is ideal for reading long documents, reviewing PDFs, reviewing code, or taking handwritten notes with the integrated stylus. When you combine that vertical orientation with Gemini’s multimodal side-panel tools, being able to set the ‘Sapphire’ tablet next to your main monitor in portrait mode creates an incredible AI companion display.
The leaked photos also confirm a magnetic pen space on the top/side of the tablet portion, keeping the stylus secured and accessible whether the tablet is sitting in landscape or portrait orientation.
The right hardware foundation for Googlebook
When Google announced strict hardware standards for the Googlebook tier, our biggest hope was that OEM partners wouldn’t just build faster clamshells; they would innovate on functional hardware mechanics.
Seeing Lenovo bring their best kickstand design over to ‘Sapphire’ proves that they are thinking deeply about how users will actually hold, stand, and interact with this device in everyday scenarios.
At this point, the official launch window is likely not too far off. If press images are leaking, it’s a good guess that we’ll hear news of an actual event sooner than later, so my bet is on September at this point. And that means we get to start talking about Googlebook as something that will become a reality “next month”, and I couldn’t be more excited.
