I’m loving the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Samsung adding 1 million units proves I’m not alone

A few days ago, I wrote a post about my initial hesitancy with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. After waiting months for it to arrive, my first 24 hours were filled with unexpected friction: my thumb kept blocking the shorter outer screen when scrolling feeds, the inner display felt weirdly oriented for web browsing, and my muscle memory fought the phone’s wider passport aspect ratio at every turn. I even caught myself looking at return options on T-Mobile’s site within 24 hours.

Fast forward a few days and a few small habit tweaks, and I can officially report that saner heads prevailed and I have fallen completely in love with this phone.

And as it turns out, I’m far from the only one. Reports indicate that due to overwhelming demand, Samsung has ordered an additional 1 million Galaxy Z Fold 8 units to be produced. For an expensive, niche (or not?) foldable, adding a million extra units to the production line right after launch is wild, and it proves that Samsung’s gamble on this new form factor has captured the interest of the phone-buying market.

Small habit tweaks, big payoffs

Once I stopped fighting the phone and adjusted the way I approached it (I came from the Z Fold 5 and its crazy-thin outer display for 2.5 years, after all), all the benefits of this design really started clicking into place.

The outer cover display that felt squat and awkward for about 24 hours has turned into a fantastic screen for quick, one-handed tasks. I can knock out replies, check notifications, or skim headlines without even opening the phone, and the extra width makes typing on the cover screen far more accurate for me than on older, narrower foldables.

When I do open it up, having what amounts to a mini tablet in my pocket at all times has continued to be an incredibly important way that I use my phone throughout the day, with some real added benefits over older, square foldables like the Z Fold 5. Here’s a quick look at how the Z Fold 8 is excelling in tons of ways for me so far:

• Reading & Content: Reading e-books on the wider inner screen is incredible. and that same orientation is fantastic for browsing the mobile web as well.
• Media & Gaming: Firing up games or watching videos feels expansive, giving you that full small-tablet canvas without the weird cropping or massive black bars you get with square internal screens.
• Performance: Powered by top-tier silicon, the phone doesn’t skip a beat no matter what I throw at it.
• Battery Life: Even with a bit of new phone syndrome making me pick it up and open it constantly throughout the day, I’m comfortably ending heavy-usage days with around 50% battery remaining. That has not been the case with prior foldables for me.

A reminder that good hardware is worth the adjustment

We are creatures of habit. When a new device forces me to change how I hold a phone, scroll a feed, or position my fingers, the immediate reaction is often resistance. But as I’ve learned over the past week, a brief adjustment period is a small price to pay when the hardware on the other side of that curve is this good.

Samsung taking a risk on a wider, passport-style foldable seems to have paid off already. If you’ve been on the fence about the Z Fold 8 because of the shape change, take it from someone who almost sent it back: give your brain a day or two to adjust, and you won’t want to go back to a standard slab phone ever again.
