Meet Hiroshi Lockheimer. Thanks to the magic of Twitter, we can hear bits and pieces of news and hype directly from people with titles like SVP Android, Chrome OS & Play
His Tweet from about 1 hour ago makes a claim that: a) He is uniquely in a position to make and, b) something really big is happening at the 10/4 event.
In the pic above, you can clearly see the tweet that reads:
We announced the 1st version of Android 8 years ago today. I have a feeling 8 years from now we’ll be talking about Oct 4, 2016.
Take a second and digest that.
We have the SVP over Android, Chrome and Google Play saying, on Androids official 8th birthday, that in 8 years from now we’ll be talking about 10/4/2016.
Reading between the lines, this seems like clear evidence that our expectations surrounding 10/4 are completely warranted. On a day when Google employees are making little statements and posting on social media all about how awesome it has been seeing Android develop over the past 8 years, the SVP over Android and Chrome contrasts this pretty epic point in history (Android’s inception) to the 10/4 event.
He’s comparing this upcoming event to the birth of an OS that has taken the world by storm. From the Android Wikipedia:
As of 2015 , Android has the largest installed base of all operating systems; Since 2013, devices running it also sell more than Windows, iOS and Mac OS X devices combined.
10/4 is set to be the start of something that Google believes will be Android-big.
And that is really big.
This is not about a few phones. Or Wi-Fi. Or Google Home.
This is about a foundational shift in Google and it’s products; likely both software and hardware.
I’ll be honest, the piece I wrote about Google going all-in for this event had me a little worried that I could miss badly. I was concerned that the day would come, a few awkward hardware announcements would be made, and it would be back to business as normal.
Instead, things like this tweet are giving me more and more reason to believe that Google is setting the stage for a massive shift that we are likely missing many details of. While you and I are wondering and postulating, I think Google has some things in store that are going to surprise us a lot!
We are just over 1 week away. I, for one, cannot wait.
