Overall, I have to say I’ve been pretty happy with the smartwatch development over the past few years. These devices from Samsung, Google, and Apple are effective at what they do, look good (mostly), and add quite a bit of utility to your wrist.

But the truth is, not everyone wants another screen constantly vying for their attention. Sometimes, you just want the data without the distraction. And it seems Google is addressing that exact need with the official announcement of the Fitbit Air.

A tiny pebble with serious tracking power

The Fitbit Air is Google’s smallest tracker yet, completely ditching the screen for a discreet, lightweight pebble design. Don’t let the size fool you, though. This little device packs in high-fidelity sensors capable of 24/7 heart rate monitoring, Afib alerts, SpO2 tracking, and detailed sleep stage analysis.

Because it’s so incredibly light and sits silently on your wrist, Google is heavily pitching this as a 24/7 wearable. You can even wear a Pixel Watch during the day and swap to the Fitbit Air at night just for sleep tracking without missing a beat in your data.

Battery life that actually lasts

One of the biggest pain points of modern wearables is battery longevity. The Fitbit Air largely eliminates that, promising up to a week of battery life on a single charge. And when you do finally run dry, a quick five-minute charge will give you a full day’s worth of power. That kind of endurance is exactly what a screenless tracker needs to succeed.

Seamless tracking and fresh bands

Everything syncs smoothly with the new Google Health app, where the tracker can automatically detect and log common activities. It’s also designed to be the perfect companion for the new Google Health Coach, which allows you to log workouts by simply snapping a photo of your cardio equipment or a gym whiteboard.

To keep things stylish, Google is launching a variety of swappable bands:

  • Performance Loop: Made from breathable, recycled materials.
  • Active Band: A sweatproof silicone option for high-intensity training.
  • Elevated Modern Band: A classic, stylish option that looks more like a traditional bracelet.

There is also a special Stephen Curry Special Edition that features an elegant rye brown and game-day orange colorway, complete with a water-resistant coating and raised racing stripes for better airflow.

Pricing and availability

The standard Fitbit Air is available for pre-order starting today for $99.99, while the Stephen Curry Special Edition will hit US shelves on May 26 for $129.99. Both versions include a three-month trial of Google Health Premium to get you started with all those new Google Health Coach features.
