We have all been there: you are trying to track down a specific detail like a project milestone or a flight confirmation and you find yourself digging through a dozen fragmented email threads. Google is aiming to end that frustration by bringing AI Overviews to Gmail search.
Instead of just returning a list of emails that contain your search terms, Gmail can now synthesize the information across multiple conversations to give you a direct answer.
Natural Language, Natural Answers
The core of this update is the ability to ask natural questions. Rather than searching for a specific sender or subject line, you can now type queries directly into the search bar like:
- “What were the latest comments from the UX deck?”
- “Which invoices are still outstanding to Sandbox Supplies?”
- “What are the details of my upcoming trip to New York?”
Gemini will then scan your relevant threads and provide a concise summary at the top of your search results, effectively doing the “sifting” for you.

Expanding Beyond the ‘Pro’ Tier
Previously, this high-level search capability was limited to individual users with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. This new rollout brings the feature to a much wider audience, including:
- Business: Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise: Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Education: Users with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on
- Frontline Plus
Rollout and Requirements
The rollout began on April 22, 2026, for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. Note that this is an extended rollout, so it might take more than 15 days before the feature is visible in your specific inbox.
To see these AI Overviews, you (or your admin) must have Smart features in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence enabled in your settings. Once those are on, your Gmail search bar becomes significantly more than a basic filter—it becomes a researcher that knows your inbox as well as you do.
