Gmail for the web begins rolling out Material You redesign, option to disable Integrated view

Google stated back in February that it would give Gmail for the web a complete Material You overhaul. At first, however, it only received its much anticipated “Integrated” view, which placed Mail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet along the left-hand sidebar as icons instead of them being completely separate widgets in the sidebar itself. Clicking these would allow each service to take over the main window, providing the user with a lot more space to work without having to visit another Chrome tab.

This morning on the Workspace Updates blog, Google revealed that it is now ready to begin rolling out the aforementioned Material You redesign to nearly all users! Actually, this exciting visual feature was mentioned as a sidebar to a larger topic, which we’ll discuss in a moment, but just look at it – it’s beautiful.

More accent colors, pill-shaped backdrops, rounded corners, and more draw your eye and help you get through all of those emails without you feeling as though you’re staring at lines of code (I always feel this way when I sift through email!) It also looks as though all emails marked as read will fade into the blue accent color, while unread emails will keep an attention-grabbing white background and bold text.

Google Workspace Updates

As for the focus on the update, the company shared that the Integrated View for Gmail would be rolling out an option to revert to classic Gmail in the settings menu. Before, if this new view was toggled on, it could not be turned back off, and apparently, Google has received some feedback that has it hoping to improve the Integrated view before making it the default experience.

This and the Material You update ought to be available to you over the next two weeks, but it could potentially take a bit longer.
