Starting today, Google is rolling out one of the most requested features for its new AI-driven home experience. Continued Conversation allows you to have a genuine back-and-forth dialogue with your assistant without having to repeat the “Hey Google” wake word before every single follow-up request.

This update marks a major step toward making the smart home feel less like a series of commands and more like a helpful partner.

How it works

The mechanics are simple: after you ask your initial question using the wake word, the assistant provides an answer and then keeps the microphone active for a few additional seconds. You will know the device is still listening because the lights on your smart speaker or display will remain pulsed or glowing.

During that window, you can jump straight into your next thought. If the assistant finishes telling you the weather in Tokyo, you can simply ask, “How about tomorrow?” and Gemini will understand exactly what you are talking about.

What makes it different this time?

While a version of this feature existed for the legacy Google Assistant, it was often rigid and limited in scope. Google has supercharged this new version with several key improvements:

  • Conversational Context: Unlike the old version, which simply reopened the mic for a distinct new query, Gemini retains the thread of the dialogue. You can build on previous answers or explore a topic deeply without repeating yourself.
  • Smarter “Side-Talk” Detection: One of the biggest annoyances with an open mic is accidental activation. Google has refined its detection models so Gemini can better tell the difference between a follow-up question and a side conversation you might be having with someone else in the room.
  • A Global Launch: While the old Assistant feature was largely limited to English, Continued Conversation on Gemini for Home is launching for all supported languages and regions.
  • Consistent, Whole-Home Access: Once enabled, the feature works for the entire home, including guests, ensuring the experience is seamless across all your devices.

How to get started

The rollout begins today for all Gemini for Home voice assistant languages. If you want to give it a try, you can enable it within the Google Home app by navigating to Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation.

Whether you are managing a complex shopping list or just running through a few quick household tasks, the ability to talk naturally makes a massive difference in how fast you can actually get things done.
