Just a week after Google pushed a point update to iron out initial window stutter and touch latency on ChromeOS 151, the development team is back with an additional maintenance update. Google has officially begun rolling out ChromeOS version 16733.57.0 (Browser version 151.0.7922.221) to supported Chromebooks and ChromeOS Flex devices on the Stable channel.
Seeing two rapid point updates within a week of a major milestone release isn’t unprecedented, but it is a clear signal that Google is actively working on some platform stability details ahead of the larger milestone 152 and 153 transitions coming down the pike.
What’s changing under the hood
According to the official Google Chrome Releases Stable Channel announcement, version 16733.57.0 targets a handful of lingering edge-case bugs that survived the previous .54 build:
- Bluetooth peripheral wake-from-sleep stability: Fixed an intermittent handshake failure where paired Bluetooth mice and wireless keyboards would fail to reconnect immediately after opening a Chromebook’s lid from an extended sleep state.
- Renderer process memory cleanup: Addressed a subtle memory retention bug in tab discard operations, ensuring background tabs properly release system RAM on 4GB and 8GB memory-constrained devices.
- Aura compositor frame pacing: Applied further micro-optimizations to window animations when dragging external monitor windows across disparate refresh rate displays (e.g., a 60Hz laptop panel paired with a 120Hz or 144Hz external monitor).
- Audio daemon sleep recovery: Patched a rare audio routing hang that caused media playback to freeze when unplugging USB-C audio DACs or headphones during active video playback.
Why back-to-back point updates are great for ChromeOS stability
ChromeOS 151 packed in lots of critical security patches, the retirement of legacy Chrome Apps in Kiosk mode, and real-time Safe Browsing hooks for Gemini in Chrome. Whenever a platform undergoes that much under-the-hood change in a 4-week update cycle, subtle edge-case issues are bound to slip through the cracks.
How to get version 16733.57.0 on your device
This update is rolling out over the air (OTA) across all supported Chromebooks and ChromeOS Flex hardware. To check for the update manually:
- Open your Chromebook Settings.
- Click About ChromeOS in the bottom left menu.
- Select Check for updates.
Your device will download version 16733.57.0 and prompt a quick restart to apply the fixes.
