With over a decade of digging through code commits in the Chromium Gerrit under my belt, I have to say that there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of watching a long-shot hardware deduction get proven right. Back in June, when I was combing through early firmware commits and memory allocation routines for a new Qualcomm board codenamed ‘Calypso’, all signs pointed toward desktop-class silicon. I put some pieces together and published my take that Qualcomm’s ‘Calypso’ would likely be a Snapdragon X2 Googlebook.
Now, thanks to newly surfaced internal documentation, we have explicit confirmation: Calypso is indeed the 12-core Snapdragon X2 and is on the way to Googlebook.
From speculation to confirmation
The new leak, originally shared by hardware leaker Longhorn (@never_released) and reported by Notebookcheck, identifies Calypso as Qualcomm’s internal development alias for “Mahua” – the exact 12-core Snapdragon X2 die that powers retail chips like the X2P-64-100 and X2E-78-100.
While I wasn’t initially certain of whether or not ‘Calypso’ was something new or an existing SoC, the presence of hardware-isolated CPU controllers, PCIe Gen 4 storage lanes, and deep memory allocation routines made it clear that Google and Qualcomm are hard at work to bring a flagship-level Snapdragon to Google’s laptops – and the Snapdragon X2 was the clear candidate that made all of that makes sense.
With this latest revelation that ‘Calypso’ is just a hidden code name for ‘Mahua’, all the pieces are in place to confirm without question that the Snapdragon X2 is on the way for Googlebook at some point down the road.
What the Snapdragon X2 brings to Googlebook
This confirmation is a massive deal for the upcoming Googlebook platform launching later this fall. While MediaTek’s Dimensity CX platform will anchor first-gen devices like the Lenovo ‘Sapphire’ detachable, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 provides the raw horsepower required for heavy desktop multitasking and local AI processing.
In the (hopefully) near future, here is what this 12-core Snapdragon X2 platform will deliver to the Googlebook ecosystem:
- Heavyweight Processing: 12 custom Oryon CPU cores delivering desktop-class performance that can stand toe-to-toe with Apple’s M-series MacBooks.
- 80 TOPS NPU for Local Gemini AI: Massive on-device neural processing capability to run local AI tasks like screen reasoning, Magic Pointer contextual cursor suggestions, and live audio transcription without needing cloud-based help.
- Desktop-Class Expansion: Native support for high-speed NVMe storage, multi-monitor display routing, and high-bandwidth peripherals.
Looking ahead to the fall launch
It is always fun to see early Gerrit digging pay off, but the real test will come when these Snapdragon X2 devices actually come close to launching. From what I can tell, I don’t see those devices shipping on day one. Instead, Qualcomm’s inclusion in the launch plans will likely be tied to something like we’ve seen with ‘Bluey’ Boards and the Snapdragon X Plus to start.
But as time goes on, if Google wants these laptops to compete across the board with Windows and Macbook, chips like the Snapdragon X2 will be required. With the inclusion of Adobe Premier Pro on the shelf in the Lenovo leaks over the past few days, I’d say we’ll need that extra processor headroom sooner than later.
