For those of us who have truly embraced the foldable form factor, the arrival of a new Pixel Fold is always an interesting occasion. After spending considerable time with Samsung’s Z Fold series over the past few years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for having a phone that transforms into a tablet in your pocket. Today, we’re taking a first look at the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and from the get-go, it’s clear Google has refined an already-excellent design.
First impressions: thin and gorgeous
Right away, the new Moonstone color of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold stands out. It’s a beautiful, elegant colorway that looks fantastic. The device is impressively thin, though it doesn’t exactly rival Samsung’s latest Z Fold 7.
When closed, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is remarkably similar in size and feel to a standard smartphone, specifically the Pixel 10 Pro. This means you get a usable, comfortable outer screen that doesn’t feel cramped, allowing you to use it as a regular phone without needing to constantly open it up.
The screens: a wider view and less-visible crease
Opening the device reveals a spacious inner display that offers an almost-square aspect ratio. This provides significantly more screen real estate than the taller, thinner inner displays of Samsung’s prior foldables (not the Z Fold 7), making it excellent for content consumption and multitasking. Both the inner and outer displays are 120Hz OLED panels, ensuring a buttery-smooth experience with deep blacks and punchy colors.
But an impressive improvement is the relative shallowness of the screen crease. When looking at the Pixel 10 Pro Fold head-on with the screen on, the crease is impressively less visible than what I use daily on my Z Fold 5. Even in the worst possible lighting conditions (screen off, direct light shining on it), the crease is dramatically less discernible than on previous generations and competing devices. Google has truly outdone itself with the new gearless hinge mechanism and internal display, making the crease much less of an issue for everyday use.
Tensor G5 and some similar cameras
Under the hood, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is powered by the new Tensor G5 chip and comes with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, so performance should be solid. While the GPU isn’t what you want if you are really into games, those who use their phones for all other tasks should be satisfied.
The camera system is a triple rear setup with a 48MP wide lens, a 10.5MP ultrawide with macro focus, and a 10.8MP 5x telephoto lens. While the megapixel count isn’t quite as high as the Pixel 10 Pro or Pro XL, it’s still a “Pixel” camera, meaning you can expect solid photos thanks to Google’s renowned software processing.
In the box, you’ll find the usual minimal fare: a charging cable and documentation. Interestingly, unlike other Pixel 10 phones, the Fold does retain a physical SIM card slot alongside eSIM support.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold feels like more mature, polished foldable. For those who want the best of both a phone and a large-screen tablet in one pocketable device, combined with Pixel’s excellent cameras and software, this could very well be your next phone. How it actually stands up to far stiffer competition from Samsung this time around, it’s unclear how it will fare head-to-head, but Google has done a good job once again building a gorgeous foldable that fully delivers the Pixel experience in a much larger form factor.
