Gems, the customizable assistants built into Gemini, are now rolling out to free users on the web and also via the Android app. For those unfamiliar, Gems are essentially custom AI assistants that users can tailor to your specific needs. Gemini offers five pre-made Gems to get users started – Brainstormer, Career Guide, Coding Partner, Learning Coach, and Writing Editor – but you are free to build your own as well and begin training it right away.
The true power of Gems lies in their customizability, however. Users can define specific instructions, including desired response length and tone, to automate repetitive or complex tasks. This level of personalization allows users to create AI assistants that perfectly align with their workflows; and, you can also upload files for reference enhances the utility of these custom Gems, enabling them to process and analyze specific documents.
Accessing these custom AI assistants is straightforward. On mobile, users can find the Gem manager within the account menu, while on the web, it’s located in the side panel. It’s important to note that while Gems can be used on mobile, creation and customization are currently limited to gemini.google.com.
Google bringing Gems to the unpaid users of Gemini is the latest in a trickle-down move that continues to see previously-paid features arriving for those a bit less vested in Google’s AI chatbot. Usually, as these things go, the move to make more advanced features available to non-paying users means more interesting and useful features are likely on the way to the paying Gemini Advanced users. With Google I/O 2025 around the corner, I’m sure we’ll hear more about all that soon.
