There’s absolutely no doubt about it: the upcoming MediaTek Kompanio Ultra is going to be a beast of a chip for upcoming Chromebooks. We expect at least one device with this high-octane processor inside at Google’s (likely) Chromebook event in May; and we’re hopeful another will be on its heels for release later in 2025.
While other Chromebooks with other processors inside them are surely on the way, this new ARM processor from MediaTek has what looks like every single upside you could ask for in an SoC meant for Chromebooks. From impressive battery projections to easily the best overall performance we’ve ever seen in a Chromebook, the Kompanio Ultra looks to be able to deliver in every single way across the board.
One impressive spec showcases its power
If you haven’t already seen the graphic MediaTek put together, I’ll drop it below. It shows off all sorts of proficiencyies the Kompanio Ultra will possess, but one of these sticks out to me more than others as an absolute showcase of what this chip will be capable of.

See that one section in the middle on the right? The one that shows off a Chromebook pushing its internal screen and two additional screens? The wild part is this setup will be possible with those two added displays being pushed at 4K60 – a feat that takes a lot of CPU/GPU horsepower.
Add this to the big benchmark scores, the 50 TOPS of NPU power, and the powerful GPU inside this system and you have a combination of factors that make the Kompanio Ultra a chip that I’m very eagerly anticipating at this point.
While we’ve had promises of better ARM performance over the years, it’s never fully materialized in a handful of top-tier Chromebooks that are sleek, light, quiet, long on battery, and wildly powerful. The Kompanio Ultra is promising all of those things, and I simply cannot wait to see it in action. Hopefully very soon, too!
