We talk a lot about high-end streaming gear here, but sometimes a deal comes along that is just too good to ignore. Right now, Walmart has dropped the price of their Onn Google TV Streaming Stick (Full HD) to a ridiculous $9.
To put that in perspective, that is less than the cost of a fast-food lunch. At this price, it’s firmly in “impulse buy” territory, and frankly, it’s a no-brainer for a couple of very specific reasons.
The “Remote Hack”
If you’ve ever tried to buy a replacement remote for a Chromecast with Google TV, you know they usually cost around $20. This Onn device comes with a solid, Google-reference design (G10) remote in the box. Because it uses standard Bluetooth pairing, you can easily pair this remote with your existing Chromecast with Google TV (both 4K and HD models), other Onn models, or TVs with Google TV built-in (from brands like Sony, TCL, Hisense, etc.).
By picking this up for $9, you are essentially getting a brand-new, high-quality replacement remote for half price, with a fully functional streaming stick thrown in for free. It’s the cheapest way to replace a lost or broken remote.
Perfect for the guest room
If you do plan to use the stick, it’s important to manage expectations. This is a 1080p HD device with 1.5GB of RAM. It isn’t going to win any speed races, and I wouldn’t recommend plugging it into a 65-inch 4K OLED.
However, for a guest room or a kid’s room, it is perfect. It gives you the full Google TV interface, access to all your apps (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, etc.) for under $10. It’s a fantastic stocking stuffer that is actually useful.
If you need something more powerful for your main setup, I’d still point you toward the excellent Onn 4K Pro (on sale for $45) or Google’s own TV Streamer (on sale for $75). But for $9? You absolutely can’t go wrong with this stick!
