UPDATED – 4/17/2025: Google has confirmed that the latest Pixel camera update fixes this issue and it is no longer a problem.
Reports are surfacing regarding a minor software bug that is affecting the front-facing camera on the Pixel 9a. According to user feedback within the Google Pixel Reddit community, a flickering effect may be observed in the selfie camera preview when attempting to capture images in darker environments.
Notably, this issue appears to be isolated to the real-time preview displayed before a photo is taken. User accounts and initial testing indicate that the final captured image remains unaffected by this visual flicker. The behavior is particularly noticeable when the camera is directed towards darker subjects, where a gray or lightened flickering can be seen within the preview window.
It seems the underlying cause is a software-related issue, potentially involving the automatic Night Sight feature engaging prematurely or behaving unexpectedly during the preview stage in low-light conditions. Apparently, uninstalling the latest Pixel Camera app update resolves the flickering, reverting the selfie camera to its standard operation. For Pixel 9a users running into this flicker, just know that the actual quality of the captured images won’t be impacted by this bug, and a fix should be on the way soon.
