Confirmed: Snapdragon Chrome OS tablet ‘Coachz’ will have an external wireless charging stylus

December 10, 2020 By Robby Payne Leave a Comment

Back in November, it seemed like every other article I published was about the upcoming Snapdragon 7c tablet ‘Coachz’. I’m clearly excited by this device, what it will be capable of, and all the new features it will eventually ship with. As one of the first Chrome OS devices with the Snapdragon 7c, an 11-inch screen, a kickstand, wireless charging, a 3:2 QHD screen and a dedicated keyboard accessory (‘Zed’), this tablet is shaping up to be a very interesting Chromebook indeed.

I also ran with another assumption in late November that touted ‘Coachz’ could steal one of the iPad Pro’s coolest tricks: a magnetized spot for the stylus that also charges it wirelessly. I didn’t have all the proof I wanted at the time, but there was enough circumstantial evidence to make the case that it was certainly possible that ‘Coachz’ would ship with this sort of pen setup. Now I’ve found the proof I was after.

In this change, you can see work is being done on the peripheral charger – a framework for ‘Coachz’ to supply power to external devices. But the line that seals the deal here is “For example, when a stylus is connected to WLC port (wireless charging), the node prints…” followed by “Test=Verified on CoachZ proto.”

This confirms that ‘Coachz’ has a stylus that is connecting to the outside of the device and charging. While I had to use a bit of deductive reasoning to make my case on this feature in my earlier post, this in-progress change spells out what I’d already suspected: ‘Coachz’ will ship with an attachable (likely magnetic), wireless charging pen as part of it’s overall package.

I’m in the process of reviewing the excellent HP Chromebook Elite c1030 right now and HP’s own USI pen magnetically attaches to the side and has stayed put in and out of the bag, so I’ve become even more excited by the possiblility of such a setup for a tablet/Chromebook that has this storage trick alongside the ability to keep the pen topped up and chaged, too. As always, I’m still digging for more details on ‘Coachz’ and am anticipating this Chromebook more than just about any other device arriving in 2021. There are tons of upcoming devices to keep an eye on, so stay tuned and get subscribed below so you don’t miss a bit of it!
