Last month, Google introduced real-time Scam Detection with the Pixel 9 series, a feature that utilizes Gemini Nano’s multimodal capabilities to identify suspicious call patterns. Now, this valuable protection is extending to your wrist with the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 receiving the same scam detection alert capabilities.

This update addresses a common scenario: being on the move and needing to quickly identify a potential scam call without pulling out your phone. As Google states, “If you’re on the go, you can be alerted to a scam call without needing to take out your phone.”

The core of this feature relies on the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold’s on-device processing. Gemini Nano analyzes call audio in real-time, looking for patterns indicative of scam attempts. If a potential scam is detected, the phone provides immediate feedback through vibrations and an on-screen “Likely scam” warning.

The Pixel Watch integration works seamlessly with your paired Pixel 9. When a call received on your watch exhibits scam-like characteristics, the watch will alert you mid-call, provided it receives a Bluetooth signal from your Pixel 9. It’s important to note that direct LTE calls to the watch are not supported, as the processing requires the phone’s resources.

The Scam Detection feature is rolling out starting today for the Pixel Watch 2 and 3, initially available in the United States for English-language calls. To enable this feature, ensure that Scam Detection is activated within the Phone app settings on your Pixel 9 by heading to Phone Settings > Scam detection.

Users with Scam Detection enabled will hear an audible beep at the beginning of the call and at regular intervals throughout the conversation. If the system detects a high probability of a scam, the watch will deliver a notification, along with audible and vibration alerts. Users can then choose to dismiss the notification or end the call directly from their watch.

This integration of Scam Detection on the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 provides an added layer of security, allowing users to stay informed and protected against potential scams, even when their phone is not readily accessible. As Google continues to refine and expand its AI-powered features, we expect to see further enhancements to user safety and convenience across the Pixel ecosystem.
