When the new-ish Pixel Buds Pro were surprisingly announced at Google I/O 2022, I was beyond excited for them. Gone was the troublesome ‘thorn’ that held them in place in past versions, and Google finally delivered on ANC for their own in-house earbuds. My only hangup was with the lag we’ve seen on prior Pixel Buds, and I knew at that point if these earbuds delivered on all that they were promising and reduced the latency from older versions, I was sold.
Unfortunately, they shipped with the same, ridiculous lag that previous Google Pixel Buds had, and I was pretty much immediately turned off. Adding to this the fact that the included ear tips don’t fit my ears that well (earbud fit is wildly subjective), I found myself enjoying the Pixel Buds Pro at a distance: as if they were great earbuds for a lot of people, just not for me.
A big fix and more features
Since their release, however, Google has cleaned things up quite a bit. In the latest update, they added some nifty EQ settings and quietly removed the Bluetooth latency as well. While I don’t feel the need to tweak the sound on my Pixel Buds Pro too often, the removal of the lag has made them completely usable for gaming and now I’ve found myself leaning more towards these earbuds for daily use.
They still don’t fit my ears that well, but the smooth connection to my Pixel 7 Pro, the multi-point connection that keeps them simultaneously connected to my current Chromebook and the unmatched touch controls alongside solid ANC and transparency modes make me want to use them more and more. The only real red flag I still have with them is the price, and just like Apple’s AirPods Pro, I think they are a bit too expensive.
Pixel Buds Pro price adjustment
However, that roadblock is now gone as well and you can get the Pixel Buds Pro for a full 25% off right now at just about any retailer you can imagine. That brings the asking price down to $149, and that price point just feels so much more on-point that the standard $199 MSRP. I know $149 is still a lot for earbuds, but it is worth noting how well these work, how good the feature set is, and the fact that they’ll likely keep getting new updates and features for quite some time.
With all that in mind, I can easily recommend the Pixel Buds Pro at this point and I think you should take a look, too. You’d be hard-pressed to find a set of wireless earbuds with all these features, this level of build quality, and the ANC quality of the Pixel Buds Pro for $149. I’ve tried a bunch of them, and sub-$100 earbuds always have a caveat here or there. With the Pixel Buds Pro, there are no real caveats to talk about at this price, and as long as they fit your ears I think you’ll be very happy with the purchase.
