Google’s integration of Gemini into the Workspace apps continues to get smarter and more practical. A few months ago, Google introduced the ability to create new files and folders using Gemini in the Google Drive side panel. Today, they are rolling out the logical and very welcome next step: you can now use Gemini to organize and move your files with simple, natural language commands, making file management less of a manual chore and letting Gemini act as a true assistant.
How it works
The process is designed to be simple and intuitive. You can simply open Gemini in the side panel of Google Drive and type a command similar to these examples to get started:
- “Create a new folder in My Drive called Q2 forecast“
- “Move the @Q1 wrap up file in my Q1 forecast folder to the @Q2 forecast folder”
- “Create a new presentation in the Q2 forecast folder”
This new capability streamlines file management by letting you perform these basic organizational actions on your behalf, directly from a text prompt.

The current limitations
It’s important to note that this is the first version of this feature, and it has a few limitations at this time. Currently, Gemini in Drive can handle creating new files/folders and moving files. The biggest limitation to be aware of is that you can only move up to 5 files at a time.
While moving five files at once might seem like a small feature, it’s the direction that has us excited. This is about reducing the friction of daily digital housekeeping. Instead of dragging and dropping multiple files across different folder windows, you can now just tell Gemini what to do. It’s another move that makes Gemini feel less like a separate tool you consult and more like an integrated assistant that can do things for you right where you work.
Availability
This new feature is rolling out now to eligible users. You’ll need to have one of the following subscriptions to see the new file management capabilities in the Gemini side panel:
- Google Workspace: Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus
- Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on
- Google One AI Premium or Google AI Pro/Ultra plans
The rollout is gradual and is expected to take up to 15 days or more for full visibility, starting today, July 7, 2025. We’re looking forward to seeing this feature evolve and hopefully handle more complex organizational tasks and a larger number of files in the future.
