So that's it for 2024. It's in the books and a lot of stuff happened, but now it feels like
0:06
the appropriate time to start looking forward to 2025. And in the world of Chromebooks and ChromeOS
0:11
there are some specific things that I know I'm looking forward to seeing, develop and show up
0:17
And so just want to share a couple of those things with you. But before I get into all that stuff, I'm looking forward to in 2025, I want to extend a quick invitation to
0:29

It's just a fantastic deal at two bucks a month. And so just wanted to invite you to check it out
1:08
Chromeunbox.com forward slash join is where you can learn more. And hopefully I'll see you in there
1:13
So let's start off with the first thing that I'm probably the absolute most excited about to see in 2025
1:19
And that is the emergence of a new baseboard and a couple of devices at least, hopefully, that will come from that
1:26
that house this new MediaTech MT-8196 processor. And if you've not been over to
1:31
ChromeUnbox.com and read about this thing, here's the quick bullet point list of
1:38
things that this new processor is going to be. A, it's going to be arm. It's a media tech
1:42
processor. But from the benchmarks that we're seeing already, and this is before the devices are actually out
1:48
we're talking like 12th gen, core I3, core I5 performance. Very, very fast
1:54
It's arm, so it should be really battery. efficient. There's a couple hints that we might see a tablet come from this line of devices
2:01
but regardless, we're looking at some, you know, really thin, sleek, light Chromebooks that'll
2:08
have this arm chip in them, at least two that we know are in development right now. And
2:12
that just super exciting because ultimately I think Arm is the future of computing across all platforms And Media Tech has been doing a great job The duet that came out in 2024 was awesome
2:24
But we're looking for something with, you know, that high-end power and capability
2:29
And it looks like the MT-81-6, whatever it's going to be called in the future, is going to deliver that with an arm processor with fanless, thin designs, hopefully, and all that kind of stuff
2:39
So, super-duper excited about the MT-81-96. in a similar vein, the second thing I'm really looking forward to is a family devices that
2:48
will come from a baseball called Fat Cat, which is just fun because it's kind of a play on words
2:53
This will be the development device for Panther Lake, which is the latest version of Intel's
2:59
SOC lineup. I'm not going to get into all the stuff. Like Intel's lineups are incredibly complex and very difficult to understand, even for somebody
3:07
that spends time researching them. All you need to know is this will be the latest version of Intel's processors
3:12
And so that means updated GPUs, faster processing, better battery life, better AI capabilities
3:17
And we haven't seen a lot of big movement with Chromebooks in the Intel space in the last, I don't know, 18 months or so
3:24
And I think a lot of that was because we're kind of waiting on Panther Lake to come out
3:28
So Intel slated this chip for early 2025. So I would expect Chromebooks to start showing up in the spring and summer and hopefully towards the fall in 2025 that will have these chips inside
3:41
and as far as what they're going to be able to do, don't know
3:45
But I'm sure we'll see big performance gains again. If they can get the battery life really in check
3:50
and obviously make sure that all the AI stuff that Google wants to put in Chromebooks works really well on them
3:56
I'm super excited to see what Intel's got for 2025 with Panther Lake. And speaking of AI features
4:03
we don't know this for sure, but I have a general thought that Google's going to spend a lot of effort
4:10
getting more AI stuff built into Chromebooks and ChromeOS across the board as 2025 kind of takes shape
4:17
And so we don't know what those things are going to be. That's been kind of the fun of all this as Google has unveiled new AI features for ChromeOS
4:25
We get to see them and kind of just be surprised by them. And so I very much looking forward to whatever it is that Gemini is going to bring to the table Maybe it Gemini Live officially like on Chromebooks Maybe it Gemini built in when you say hey I not going to say the word but when you say hey gee you know Gemini pops up on your Chromebook or deeper integrations with stuff like you know
4:47
summarize this or help me write or whatever. There's all these different ways that Gemini can kind of
4:51
be built into Chromebooks on an even deeper and more helpful level. And so I'm very much looking forward
4:57
to seeing what in 2025 we get to see from Gemini and Chromebooks. And on a
5:02
kind of unrelated note. This is completely speculation for me, but it's something I really think is going to happen in 2025
5:09
I really think we're going to see some cohesion and some cross-platform stuff with Android XR and Chromebooks
5:16
And so you haven't seen anything about it. Android XR is a new platform from Google
5:21
working with Samsung and Qualcomm to build, not just like VR headsets
5:25
but also kind of Google Glass-esque headsets as well, like just glasses that have like AR over
5:32
overlays and stuff like that. And then, if you haven't looked into it, just go search Android XR and watch some of the stuff
5:37
I mean, it's, you know, if you've seen the Apple Vision Pro and you messed with a MetaQuest
5:42
you kind of get the general idea of what we're talking about here. But there's a lot of ways that that software technically could start working with Chromebooks
5:50
And specifically, being able to wirelessly or wired maybe extend your desktop, your ChromeOS desktop into this kind of environment
5:59
So if you don't want to mess with like an extended display, or something like that, maybe Android XR would work right with a Chromebook and be able to give you
6:06
you know, two or three screens up in a virtual space to work from. I don't know
6:10
I think there's all kinds of crossplay. We've seen tons of work being done for Chrome, the browser, in the repositories, specifically for XR
6:19
So I feel like, you know, the sky's the limit when it comes to this stuff
6:23
And Android XR is going to be a big deal in 2025 for sure. But for Chromebooks specifically, I think there definitely could be some interplay there
6:31
And finally, talking about Android, again, if you haven't seen it already, there are all kinds of
6:37
rumors going around that, you know, Google is moving Chrome OS out and Android's coming in
6:43
And I can't even speak to all that stuff exactly right now because a lot of it's just unknown
6:50
There stuff that we don know that going on But one thing that we do know that happening and Google was really forthright with this is that the kernel underlying all of ChromeOS is going to be swapped out for the Android kernel
7:02
And so with that, maybe that's part of the entire thing that we're seeing rumored right now
7:09
I have a hard time believing they're just going to take ChromeOS out and put Android in its place
7:14
They just don't serve the same purposes. And there are huge swaths of people that rely on ChromeOS every single day in the education
7:20
and the business and enterprise sectors that that would really hurt a lot
7:25
and I think it would look really bad for Google. So I don't necessarily think that's happening
7:28
but we don't know. We just don't know exactly what's going on right now
7:32
but I do know that kernel change is happening. And I think from that change
7:36
we might start seeing some stuff maybe later in 2025 that might be indicative of what's going on
7:43
Hopefully Google will let us know a little bit more about their plans
7:47
and what they're thinking with this move and how they're going to go about doing it. But for right now, we just don't know
7:52
I'm just really hopeful that in 2025, some, not all, but some of those questions might get answered
7:58
But those are five things I'm looking forward to. And there's plenty of other things that could happen in 2025
8:04
And generally, I think it's just important to note that around here, at least
8:08
we're still very optimistic for the future of ChromeOS for Chromebooks and where they're going
8:12
what AI is going to do, what new processors are going to show up, what new hardware is going to be unveiled
8:17
And there's a lot of energy around ChromeOS, for Chromebooks and where they're going to be unveiled. and there's a lot of energy around Chromebooks
8:20
You know, ChromoS Flex would even talk about that in all these different spaces
8:24
and education and in retail spaces and health care. Like, it's just blowing up and it's all over the place
8:31
And there are changes under the hood that are happening, obviously, but I'm very hopeful that those are all going to be for the better as well
8:38
And so I just think that there's some really cool stuff that could end up coming down
8:42
the pipe in 2025. And so as we roll into this new year
8:46
I'm excited and I hope you're excited too but that's it for this one if you enjoyed this video
