It seems some retailers just couldn’t wait for Google’s big smart home event on October 1st. We’ve been anticipating a refresh of the Nest hardware lineup, and now we have our first real-world look. As reported by 9to5Google, the rumored new Nest Cam and Doorbell “2K” models are already appearing on store shelves at a Home Depot.
While you likely won’t be able to purchase one until after the official announcement (these early appearances usually get blocked at the register), the leaked packaging gives us a bit of a preview of what’s to come.
What the new boxes tell us
There are two huge takeaways from the new packaging. First, Google is clearly making the resolution bump a headline feature, adding “2K” directly to the product names on the box. This is a welcome upgrade that should bring a new level of clarity to the Nest camera lineup.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, the boxes feature a prominent “with Gemini” badge, complete with the sparkle logo. This is the first time we’ve seen this branding on physical Nest hardware packaging, and it confirms that these new devices are built from the ground up to work with the new, more powerful Gemini for Home assistant.
A familiar design with new colors
From what we can see, the physical design of the new Nest Cams and Doorbell appears to be mostly unchanged from the 2021 models. However, the leak does suggest that we’ll be getting some new colors, including a “very vibrant red” option that is sure to stand out.
The fact that these new devices are already shipped and sitting in the stock rooms of retailers like Home Depot is a fantastic sign. It strongly suggests that they will be available for purchase immediately following the official announcements at Google’s smart home event on October 1st. It’s an exciting time for the Nest ecosystem, and we can’t wait to see the full reveal.
