For a while now, it’s felt like Google’s Nest and smart home ecosystem has been a bit neglected. But after a Google executive promised this summer that the company was “committed to getting this right” and would have “more to share in the fall,” it looks like that moment is finally here.
In a new post on X, Google has officially teased a new event for Wednesday, October 1st, where it will share more news about Gemini for Home and, most excitingly, new Nest hardware.
A new Nest Camera teased
The teaser itself is simple but revealing. The post says, “Gemini is coming to Google Home,” and includes a short video that clearly shows the top of a new Nest Camera. While it looks similar to the previous generation, the camera sensor is different, confirming that this is a new, unreleased product. That means that at least one new piece of hardware is on the way.
This new camera is likely just the beginning. If you were watching the Pixel 10 launch event closely, you probably spotted the new, round smart speaker that was “accidentally” teased during Lando Norris’s segment. It’s a safe bet that this long-awaited successor to the Nest Audio will be officially unveiled on October 1st as well.
On top of that, rumors have been swirling about other new hardware, including a new wired 2K Nest Doorbell. All told, this is shaping up to be a significant refresh for the core Nest hardware lineup.
The arrival of Gemini for Home
This hardware launch is also the perfect stage for the official debut of Gemini for Home, the powerful, conversational AI assistant that is set to replace the Google Assistant. At the Pixel event, Google said “early access” for Gemini for Home would begin in October, and this October 1st date lines up perfectly for that rollout to begin. We expect the new hardware will get immediate access to the new assistant.
It’s an exciting time for Google’s smart home users. Mark your calendars for October 1st, as it’s looking like the day Google will finally make good on its promise to reinvest in the Nest ecosystem. It’s long overdue.
