Ever since Google first announced they were bringing the power of Gemini to the smart home, I’ve been impatiently checking my Google Home app, hoping to see that invite. While my phone and Chromebook have both had Gemini for a while, my Nest Hubs and Nest Audio speakers have been stuck flaky and aging Google Assistant.
Well, it looks like my waiting might finally be coming to an end. Reports are coming in that a new wave of early access invites for Gemini for Home is rolling out to users right now, and it brings some seriously cool new capabilities along with it.
The invite is the key
Just over a month after the initial, limited launch, Google is expanding the program. If you signed up for early access via the Public Preview (check your Google Home app notifications), you might see an alert letting you know that Gemini for Home is ready for setup.
The setup process looks simple but important. You’ll get a quick intro to what Gemini can do (and its current English-only limitation), and crucially, you’ll be asked to set guest filters. Since Gemini can dig into your video history and answer personal questions, you can decide exactly what info guests can access when they talk to your speakers.
Conversations across rooms
While better understanding and smarter answers are great, there is one specific new feature in this rollout that has me genuinely hyped: “conversations across devices”.
According to 9to5Google’s report, this feature allows voice-matched users to continue a conversation across devices in different rooms. Imagine asking Gemini a question on your kitchen Nest Hub, walking into the living room, and picking up right where you left off on your Nest Audio without skipping a beat. Early testing says it works “much better than initially expected,” which is high praise for a beta feature.
Saying goodbye to Google Assistant
Once you accept the upgrade, your Nest speakers and displays will make the switch to Gemini, effectively ditching Google Assistant forever on those devices. You’ll also get to pick from ten new assistant voice options to complete the transformation.
I am checking my app constantly for that notification. The idea of having a truly conversational, context-aware assistant running my smart home—one that can actually follow me from room to room—feels like the futuristic upgrade my Nest setup has desperately needed. Here’s hoping it shows up soon for me and for you as well!
