The new Pixel Buds 2a, Google’s latest entry into the affordable earbud market, are not just a minor refresh. In a recent episode of the Made by Google podcast, host Rachid Finge sat down with Pixel Buds Product Manager Vanessa Pau to get the inside story behind these new earbuds; and it’s clear Google focused on delivering pro-level features at a more accessible price point.

The conversation revealed a thoughtful approach to balancing essential upgrades with smart trade-offs, making the Pixel Buds 2a a compelling option for many at a very reasonable price point.

Pro-level Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

One of the biggest takeaways is the emphasis on Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Vanessa Pau confirmed that the top request from users of the previous A-series was the addition of ANC. And Google didn’t just check a box. Thanks to the power of the Tensor A1 chip, the Pixel Buds 2a deliver “pro-level active noise cancellation” that is actually 1.5 times stronger than the first-generation Pixel Buds Pro. This means serious immersion for your music and podcasts, even in noisy environments.

Doubled battery life and a clever case

Battery life was another key area of improvement. The Tensor A1 chip’s power efficiency contributes to longer listening times, but the case also plays a crucial role. The Pixel Buds 2a offer seven hours of listening with ANC on (10 hours with ANC off), effectively doubling the runtime of the original A-series.

And speaking of the case, it holds another fantastic, user-first feature: a user-replaceable battery. Google designed the case so that with basic tools and a repair manual, users can swap out the battery themselves. They even added a “spearmint” colored pull tab to make the process easier, a new visual signal that signifies a user-serviceable component across the Pixel portfolio.

Other notable features

  • Improved Transparency Mode: Allowing you to stay aware of your surroundings when needed.
  • Custom-designed 11mm speaker drivers with a five-band customizable EQ for great sound quality.
  • A “twist-to-adjust” stabilizer inspired by the Pixel Buds Pro 2, allowing for a more secure or comfortable fit.
  • AI-powered wind suppression and a voice call model that isolates your voice for clear calls, even in windy conditions.
  • A clever software solution for finding a misplaced case (it can ring the earbuds loudly even when the lid is closed).

To meet the compelling price point ($129), some smart trade-offs were made, such as the absence of a speaker in the charging case. However, the Pixel Buds 2a still offer support for the new Android 16 Find Hub.

The Pixel Buds 2a are a testament to Google’s ability to bring high-impact features to a more accessible price. With pro-level ANC, significantly improved battery life, and a focus on repairability, these earbuds offer a fantastic balance for everyday users that want a high-quality set of earbuds at a very fair price.
