While there wasn’t a ton of Chromebook news at CES this year, the ASUS booth did have a few devices that we spent some time with: the new detachable CM32 and the CM14 and CM15. These devices are all powered by the new MediaTek Kompanio 540, but they are distinct devices built to serve very different use cases. So, after taking a look at the detachable CM32, Robby made a quick video with the larger sibling of the new clamshell duo, the ASUS Chromebook CM15.
At first glance, the chassis feels reminiscent of the CX15 models we have seen over the past year or so, but the most immediate difference lies in the materials and finish. ASUS is experimenting with new textures across this lineup to differentiate these devices from the sea of smooth grey plastic we are used to seeing in this price category. As Robby notes, this unique finish adds a grippy tactile feel that should help with handling.
Opening the device reveals a 15.6-inch FHD display that has an anti-glare coating. While we are estimating the brightness to be around the standard 300 nits, the matte finish keeps reflections at bay and makes the panel look sharp with decent color reproduction. It is exactly the kind of practical display choice that makes sense for a device destined for harsh overhead lighting in offices and schools.
Under the hood, the device is powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor. While we haven’t tested it yet, we’re expecting significant battery life gains with this chip, which is crucial for a 15-inch device that might be away from a wall outlet for an entire school day.
ASUS has paired the processor with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which means that it should be more than capable of handling standard web-based workloads and multitasking. Connectivity is also solid for a budget-focused machine, with two USB-C ports, one USB-A, a headphone/microphone jack, and a full-size HDMI port.

Robby didn’t mention this in the video, but in a press release, ASUS says these devices feature a new tool-free latching battery system, which might be the most interesting addition here. Managing large fleets of devices in school districts often involves time-consuming repairs, but I’d imagine this new tool-free latching system will simplify battery maintenance and upgrades significantly. Combined with U.S. MIL-STD-810H durability standards, recycled plastics, and wear-resistant paint, the CM15 feels built to survive.
While ASUS hasn’t released official pricing or availability dates just yet, the Chromebook CM15 is shaping up to be a reliable, durable workhorse for those who need a larger screen and all-day endurance without the premium price tag.
