Google Workspace makes switching from Microsoft Teams way easier with free data import

For any IT administrator or enterprise team, migrating years of organizational chat history, group threads, and company channels from one collaboration platform to another is usually a massive headache.

According to a new post over at the Google Workspace Updates blog, Google has officially made Microsoft Teams data import generally available within the native Google Workspace Admin console.

Building on earlier migration improvements like moving Dropbox files directly into Google Drive, this update allows organizations of any size to migrate their full communication history from Microsoft Teams into Google Workspace at zero tool cost and with zero additional infrastructure requirements.

What’s included in the Teams data import

Rather than a bare-bones export dump, Google’s native import tool is designed for high fidelity and rapid transition across large enterprise workloads, including:

• Channels and Private chat imports: The tool imports both public/private Teams channels as well as direct 1:1 conversations and group chats.
• Turnkey Admin Console integration: The entire import process is cloud-native and executed directly inside the Workspace Admin console, removing the need to provision dedicated migration servers or buy third-party licenses.
• Faster speeds & parallelization: Using improved algorithms and parallel data processing, large-scale migrations finish significantly faster while maintaining data accuracy.
• Built-in migration planning utility: Workspace now includes an integrated planning tool that analyzes your organization’s Teams data, organizes users into speed-optimized batches, and provides clear timeline estimates before you even kick off the transfer.

How it works for Workspace Admins

If your company or school district is planning a transition from Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace, the migration is handled centrally with no action required from your end users.

To get started, a Workspace super admin can access the Data Import tool within the Admin console and connect your organization’s Azure environment to map user accounts and channels directly into Google Workspace.

The feature is currently available across all Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, covering Business Starter/Standard/Plus, Enterprise tiers, Education editions, Frontline, Essentials, and Nonprofit accounts.
