Google is taking another significant step toward making Workspace the singular hub for business productivity by simplifying the way organizations move their data into the ecosystem.
Following an open beta period, the ability to migrate files, folders, and associated permissions directly from Dropbox to Google Drive is now generally available within the New Data Migration service. This update is specifically designed to help organizations transition away from fragmented cloud storage solutions and into a unified Google Drive environment without the technical friction that usually accompanies such a move.
A streamlined migration path for Dropbox Business
The New Data Migration service allows administrators to handle the heavy lifting of moving data from Dropbox business accounts with a high degree of precision. This isn’t just a simple file dump; the service preserves the folder structures and, perhaps more importantly, the associated permissions that have already been established in Dropbox. This ensures that once the data lands in either a user’s MyDrive or a corporate Shared Drive, the transition is seamless for the end users who rely on those files daily.
Admins can manage these migrations in batches, with the system supporting up to 150 Dropbox users or team folders at a single time. This tiered approach allows for a controlled rollout, ensuring that IT teams can monitor the progress and integrity of the data as it moves across the wire.
Granular reporting and “delta” updates
One of the standout features of this new migration tool is the level of transparency it provides to administrators. The service includes comprehensive reporting that tracks the progress of the migration in real-time, providing exact counts of which files were successfully migrated and which were skipped. These reports can be exported for deep-dive error investigation and troubleshooting, which is an essential feature for any enterprise-scale move where data integrity is paramount.
Additionally, Google has included support for “delta” updates. This is a critical functionality that allows admins to run a primary migration and then follow up with a secondary pass to catch only the newly added or updated files that may have changed during the transition period. This effectively eliminates the “down-time” or data gap that often occurs when a company is trying to switch platforms while still maintaining active operations.
Broad availability across the Workspace ecosystem
Google is making this tool available to nearly every tier of the Workspace ecosystem, ensuring that small businesses and massive enterprises alike can take advantage of the consolidation. The service is live for Business Starter through Plus, all Enterprise tiers, Education, and even Nonprofit accounts.
Super Admins can find this new solution directly in the Admin console by navigating to Menu > Data > Data Import & export > Data Migration (New). While the “old” migration tools are still present for certain legacy tasks, this newer service is clearly the direction Google is heading for high-fidelity, modern data transfers. As more organizations look to simplify their tech stacks and reduce overhead, having a native, reliable path from Dropbox to Drive is a major win for the platform.
