The long, drawn-out transition to Manifest V3 is finally reaching its absolute conclusion. For over four years, Google has been signaling the end of older Manifest V2 extensions to prioritize a more secure and performant browsing experience. Now, the final deadline is officially on the calendar.
According to updated documentation spotted by PiunikaWeb and reported by 9to5Google, Google has officially circled August 31, 2026, as the final day for Manifest V2. On this date, all remaining V2 extensions will be completely removed from the Chrome Web Store.
What happens to your currently installed extensions
Google already disabled official support for V2 extensions back in July 2025, and they recently closed the remaining backend loopholes that allowed power users to manually re-enable them.
If you are still somehow running a legacy extension on an older build of Chrome (specifically Chrome 138 or earlier), the extension won’t instantly vanish from your active browser on September 1st. However, it will become completely orphaned.
Google explicitly notes that these remaining installed extensions will no longer receive any developer updates. More importantly, because they are being purged from the storefront, if you purchase a new Chromebook, powerwash your current machine, or reinstall your browser, you will not be able to download those older extensions again.
Pushing the ecosystem forward
Google has consistently positioned Manifest V3 as a necessary evolution for Chrome, offering a much more secure and privacy-focused foundation for the future of the browser. While the transition has been a bit controversial (mainly because of the strict limitations it places on how robust ad blockers can operate), Google is no longer leaving the door open for developers to drag their feet.
The August 31st deadline is the final nail in the coffin for the V2 era. If you or your enterprise are still relying on a legacy extension that hasn’t made the jump to the modern Manifest V3 framework, you have just over a month to find a viable alternative before it is pulled from the shelves for good.
