The ability to create custom, AI-generated backgrounds in Google Meet has been a fantastic feature for desktop users. It’s a fun way to express your personality, reinforce your company’s branding, or simply hide the messy room behind you during a video call. But until now, this fun tool has been a desktop-only affair.
That’s finally changing. In a new post on the Workspace Updates blog, Google has announced that it is now rolling out the ability to create custom, AI-generated background images with Gemini directly from the Google Meet app on your Android or iOS device.
Your custom background, now on the go
This is a much-needed update that brings one of the web version’s best features to your phone. Whether you’re taking a call from a coffee shop, an airport, or your car, you can now use a simple text prompt to have Gemini generate a unique, high-quality background image for you on the fly.
It’s a great feature for adding a professional touch or a bit of personality to your meetings, even when you’re away from your desk. This update brings the mobile Google Meet app to feature parity with the web, ensuring you have the same powerful and creative tools no matter where you’re joining from.
The new feature is available now for some users and will begin a wider, gradual roll-out for most others starting on October 8, 2025. It’s available to most paid Workspace subscribers, including Business Standard/Plus and Enterprise Standard/Plus, as well as users with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
