As Gemini continues to weave its way into every corner of Google Workspace, it was only a matter of time before it showed up in a big way in Google Meet. In a new announcement, Google has unveiled “Ask Gemini in Meet,” a powerful, private AI assistant that lives right inside your video calls to help you stay on top of everything that’s happening.

This new feature is designed to be your personal meeting assistant, ready to help you summarize discussions, identify key takeaways, and even catch you up on what you missed if you happen to join a call late.

Your private meeting assistant

“Ask Gemini in Meet” is a new side panel that you can interact with during a meeting to get real-time help. Based on the live meeting captions and your own Workspace content, you can ask it to:

  • Summarize the ongoing discussion or get a recap of what a specific person just said.
  • Identify key takeaways, decisions, and action items from the conversation so far.
  • Catch you up on what you missed if you joined late (this requires the host to have the “Take Notes for Me” feature enabled).

Crucially, Google emphasizes that your interactions with Gemini during a meeting are completely private to you. The feature does not create a record of any kind, and no captions or other meeting data will be stored after the call ends.

Controls and limitations

As with any powerful new AI feature, Google is providing plenty of controls. Both Workspace Admins and individual meeting hosts have the ability to turn the feature off. When it is active, all participants will be shown a clear consent banner. Also, for now, “Ask Gemini in Meet” is only available on the desktop and only supports meetings in English, with more languages coming soon.

Availability: a slow rollout

This is a powerful new tool, and Google is rolling it out slowly. Initially, “Ask Gemini in Meet” will be available only for Google Workspace Business Plus customers. It will become available for Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and other Google Workspace customers in late 2025 or early 2026.

This is a huge step forward in making meetings more productive and manageable. The ability to get a private, real-time summary or catch up on a missed portion of a call without interrupting anyone is a true game-changer, and we can’t wait to see it roll out more widely.
