Google Meet’s live captions are already an invaluable tool. Whether you’re hard of hearing, in a noisy environment, or just find it easier to follow along with text, they make meetings more accessible for everyone. But when it comes to readability, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. What’s clear and easy to read for one person might be difficult for another.

Thankfully, Google is addressing this head-on with a fantastic and thoughtful update: you can now fully customize the styling of captions in Google Meet.

This new feature gives you granular control over how captions appear on your screen, allowing you to tailor them in a way that works best for you. According to the announcement on the Google Workspace Updates blog, you’ll be able to change four key aspects of the captions:

  • Font size
  • Font type
  • Font color
  • Background color

This is a significant improvement for readability and personalization. Being able to increase the font size, choose a more legible font type, or adjust the color and background for better contrast can make a world of difference for user comfort and comprehension.

How to find these new settings

Google has made it easy to access these new options. You can customize your captions in two simple ways:

  1. During a meeting: Simply hover your mouse over the captions as they appear, and the customization options should become available.
  2. From the main menu: You can go to Settings > Captions > Customize your captions to set your preferences.

Best of all, your settings will persist across all your meetings, so you only need to set them up once to have your preferred style ready to go every time you join a call.

When you can expect it

This is not a far-off feature. The roll-out begins today, June 17, 2025, for Rapid Release domains, with Scheduled Release domains following on June 18th.

And in a move we always love to see, this feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. It’s fantastic that an important accessibility and usability feature like this is being made available for everyone.

This is exactly the kind of update that makes a big impact. While it may seem like a small tweak, offering users the ability to customize captions to their specific needs makes Google Meet a more inclusive, comfortable, and effective communication tool for all.
