Google Meet is giving users more granular control over the “Take notes for me” feature. While Gemini has been capable of capturing meeting summaries and action items for some time, the process previously required manual intervention for every single call.

This latest update introduces a dedicated toggle that allows meeting hosts to automate the experience, ensuring that notes are captured without needing to remember to trigger the feature at the start of every session.

The “Take notes for me” functionality has become a vital tool for Workspace users looking to stay present in discussions rather than being buried in a document. By capturing the essence of a conversation in real-time, it allows participants to focus on the collaboration at hand.

Until now, hosts had to remember to enable the feature during the scheduling phase or manually turn it on once the call had already begun. This new toggle removes that friction by allowing the feature to start automatically whenever the user is the host of a meeting.

User control and privacy first

Despite the convenience of automation, Google is keeping a firm opt-in stance with this rollout. The new toggle is set to OFF by default, meaning users must explicitly choose to enable the automatic start in their Google Meet settings. This ensures that AI note-taking only occurs when the user specifically wants it to, maintaining a high level of privacy and intentionality.

Meeting hosts and select participants still retain the ability to turn meeting notes off at any point during a live call, even if the automation toggle is enabled. This flexibility is crucial for sensitive discussions or breakout sessions where a formal record may not be desired. For Workspace administrators, the existing controls to enable or disable AI note-taking for their entire organization remain unchanged.

Availability and rollout schedule

This update is targeting a specific set of high-tier Workspace accounts where AI productivity is a primary focus. It is currently rolling out to users on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and those with Google AI Pro for Education.

The rollout began for Rapid Release domains on January 8, 2026, and will continue over the next two weeks. Scheduled Release domains can expect to see the new toggle starting January 22, 2026. As Google Meet becomes more of an intelligent assistant rather than just a video conferencing tool, these quality-of-life updates are essential for making AI integration feel seamless rather than intrusive.
