Google launches a dedicated Gemini app for Windows with Alt + Space shortcut

For the past year, Google has been aggressively positioning Gemini as the ambient layer connecting all of your devices. Back in July, Google took a huge step by launching a dedicated Gemini desktop experience for macOS. And now, the other major sector of the desktop ecosystem is getting the exact same treatment.

According to an announcement on News from Google, Google has officially launched the Gemini app for Windows, bringing a lightweight, native desktop client to both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users worldwide.

The standout feature of the new Windows client isn’t just that it gives you a dedicated window outside of Google Chrome; it is how quickly you can summon it without derailing your current workflow.

Why dedicated desktop apps matter for Google

Seeing Google embrace dedicated native clients on Windows and macOS is a notable shift. Historically, Google preferred keeping users strictly confined within the Chrome browser sandbox. But as desktop operating systems evolve into battlegrounds for system-wide AI integration – with Microsoft deeply embedding Copilot into the Windows taskbar and Apple weaving Apple Intelligence into macOS – Google cannot afford to keep Gemini trapped inside a single browser tab.
