Right in the middle of Apples WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), Google has dropped its own OS news. In a post overnight on the official Android Developer X account, the team confirmed that it is “almost time for the Android 16 final release” and that we should see them “back here tomorrow.” There’s nothing unclear about that. The final, stable version of Android 16 is set to begin rolling out to Pixel devices later today, June 10th.
What to expect from today’s launch
If you’ve been following the Android 16 development cycle through the Developer Previews and Beta phases, you’ll know that while this is the “final” stable release, it’s really the foundational piece of a much larger puzzle. As noted by 9to5Google, this initial launch might even feel a bit like an anticlimax compared to Apple’s huge announcement, because many of the most significant visual changes are still yet to come.
Still, today’s Android 16 release is a big step and brings with it a host of important new features that we’ve seen in testing. The highlights include:
- Battery health metrics
- Live Activities for specific applications
- Advanced Protection features
- Quick Google Wallet controls
- Various other cosmetic and usability improvements
The big changes are still coming
The really substantial overhaul that many are waiting for – the “massive Material 3 Expressive update” – is slated to arrive with the first Quarterly Platform Release (QPR1) in just a few months. That’s when we expect to see the major changes to the Quick Settings panel, the Settings menus, and other key areas of the OS interface that will bring a dramatic new look and feel to Android.
The X post from Google didn’t specify an exact time frame for the roll-out. However, based on previous Android launches, we would expect the over-the-air (OTA) update to begin pushing out to eligible Pixel devices around mid-morning Pacific Time. As these things tend to go, however, exercising a bit of patience is always a good idea.
