Google is kicking off I/O 2026 with The Android Show and maybe some answers about ‘Project Aluminium’

Google I/O 2026 is officially set for May 19th and 20th, but some juicy consumer-facing news is going to drop a little earlier than expected. For the second year in a row, Google is scheduling a dedicated podcast before the actual start of I/O 2026, and they are setting expectations incredibly high.

According to a recently spotted (and subsequently removed) YouTube teaser reported by 9to5Google, Google will be hosting “The Android Show | I/O Edition” exactly one week early on Tuesday, May 12 at 10 a.m. PT.

The countdown is on

While the video itself has been pulled, the description contained a massive teaser: “This is going to be one of the biggest years for Android yet. Tune in… and be the first to take a look at what the future holds.”

By holding this show a week before the main event, Google is clearly splitting the “What’s New” into two distinct categories: consumer-facing features for the public on May 12, and technical deep-dives for developers during the I/O keynote on May 19.

Why I’m hopeful for some answers about Project Aluminium

The phrase “one of the biggest years for Android yet” is a bold claim, even for Google. But if you’ve been following our coverage of Project Aluminium, that statement starts to make a lot of sense.

As we’ve all read about over the past year or so, Google is currently in the middle of a massive architectural shift and a re-baselining of ChromeOS on a desktop-class Android foundation. If Google is truly preparing for its most transformative Android year ever, May 12 would be the perfect moment to introduce the world to a unified, Android-powered desktop operating system.

Whether we see a full demo of Aluminium OS running on upcoming hardware like the Lenovo Sapphire or just the first official confirmation of the project, or even just an official name for the entire thing; May 12 is now officially the most important date on the calendar for the ChromeOS community. We’ll be tuning in with some pretty big expectations for sure!
