Google gives the Gemini app a new colorful icon and a more useful Android widget

As Google’s Gemini continues to evolve and integrate more deeply into the ecosystem, its branding is evolving right along with it. In new updates rolling out this week, the Gemini app on both Android and iPhone is receiving a new app icon that finally brings it visually into the fold with Google’s other core services. This update isn’t just cosmetic, however, as it also brings some welcome functionality tweaks to the Android homescreen widget and a new search feature for iOS users.

A more Google-y icon for Gemini

The most noticeable change is the new four-color logo. Moving away from the previous two-toned blue design, the new icon now adopts the iconic red, yellow, green, and blue of Google’s primary branding, much like the main Google ‘G’ icon.

The four points of the sparkle are now rounded instead of sharp, giving it a friendlier look that also holds up better at smaller sizes on your homescreen. The logo itself is also slightly larger, taking up more of its circular background. As 9to5 Google notes, this is more than just a color swap; it’s a sign of confidence from Google, visually cementing Gemini as a core part of its first-party application suite.

An updated, more useful Android widget

The update also brings some nice improvements specifically for the Gemini homescreen widget on Android. The tweaked widget now includes new, convenient shortcuts for Video and Screenshare, which let you jump directly into those Gemini Live modes.

Overall, the widget feels a bit less dense than before. The prompt field now simply says “Gemini” instead of “Ask Gemini” and no longer has its own separate Dynamic Color background. The whole widget simply feels more direct, to the point, and useful now.

iOS gets conversation search first

Interestingly, while Android gets the widget update, the iOS app received a separate new feature in its latest update. iPhone users can now search their past conversations in the Gemini app, a feature that has been available on the web but is not yet live on the Android app. You can find it via a new search field that appears when you tap the chat icon in the top-left corner.

The new icon and features are rolling out now via the latest app updates on both the Google Play Store (version 1.0.776555963) and the iOS App Store (version 1.2025.2562103). We’re still waiting to see the new icon appear on the web (for Chromebooks), but it’s great to see the mobile apps get this polished new look.
