Back in March, we covered a massive Gemini overhaul across Google Workspace that promised to turn your cloud storage into an active, intelligent partner. Now, the two biggest features from that announcement – AI Overviews in Drive and Ask Gemini in Drive – have officially dropped their beta tags and are rolling out to users everywhere.
Google is fundamentally changing how we interact with our stored files. Instead of endlessly digging through folders to find a specific document, Drive can now simply understand your files and answer your questions about them directly. Here is a reminder about the two major features hitting your account.
AI Overviews in Drive for smarter search
If you are tired of opening a dozen tabs just to piece together the status of a project, the new AI Overviews in Drive feature is going to be a massive time-saver.
Integrated directly into the Drive search bar, this feature uses Gemini to scan your documents and provide a clear, synthesized answer right at the top of your search results.
- Ask Naturally: You no longer need to rely on exact keyword matches. You can ask conversational questions like, “What’s in our Spring 2026 catalog?” or “What are the key takeaways from the Q3 marketing report?”
- See the Big Picture: Gemini will pull relevant information from multiple files, summarizing the answer so you don’t have to read each document individually.
- Seamless Transitions: If the summary isn’t quite enough, a single click will transition your search into a deeper conversation with Gemini to get more specific details.
Ask Gemini in Drive
While AI Overviews are great for quick answers, Ask Gemini in Drive is built for comprehensive research and workflow management. This feature opens up a dedicated, immersive workspace for multi-turn conversations about specific sets of files.

- Drive Projects: This is perhaps the most exciting new addition. You can now curate related files and folders into a centralized “Drive project.” This acts as an always up-to-date knowledge base that you can share with your team, making it incredibly easy to manage complex workflows and keep everyone aligned on the same source material.
- Persistent History: Your chat history is saved, meaning you can easily jump back into a previous research session right where you left off without having to re-prompt the AI.
- Focused Discussions: By grounding your prompts to a specific set of folders or a Drive project, you get highly precise, actionable insights rather than generic responses.
Rollout and Availability
Both of these features are designed securely within the Drive architecture, meaning Gemini only accesses the content you are authorized to see, honoring your existing Workspace permissions and security policies.
Google is also expanding language support globally. While the English rollout begins this week (April 22 for Rapid Release domains and early May for Scheduled Release), support for 28 additional languages will begin rolling out in early to mid-May.
To take advantage of these new tools, you will need to have Workspace smart features enabled. They are available now for the following tiers:
- Business: Standard and Plus
- Enterprise: Standard and Plus
- Consumer: Google AI Pro and Ultra
- Education Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education
