We have all been there: staring at a Google Drive folder named “Project Alpha” or “Q3 Assets,” trying to remember what on earth is actually inside it. Usually, you have to click through, open a few random Docs, and piece it together yourself.
Google is fixing that workflow with a handy new update that puts Gemini right at the top of your folder view. In a new feature rolling out now, Gemini will proactively provide insights about the files within a folder, giving you a summary of the contents at a glance.
No more “mystery folders”
This feature is an evolution of the “folder nudges” Google introduced earlier this year, moving from simple suggestions to “proactive, intelligent insights”. The goal is simple: help you understand what is inside a folder without forcing you to open individual files to check.

If the quick summary isn’t enough, you can click a new “Explore with Gemini” button. This opens the Gemini side panel, where you can get a full summary of the folder’s contents or ask follow-up questions like, “What are the deadlines mentioned in these docs?” or “Summarize the budget spreadsheets in this folder”.
Availability
This feature is currently available in English only. It is rolling out now for Rapid Release domains and will begin an extended rollout for Scheduled Release domains starting December 9, 2025.
To see it, you just need to make sure you have “smart features and personalization” turned on in your Google Workspace settings. If you find it distracting, you can easily collapse the “Insights by Gemini” section at the top of your folder.
